MEMORY CELL (2025)

Video Installation | Gypsum, Smartphone, Home Video Archive

MEMORY CELL investigates the dichotomy of memory as a site of both healing and confinement. Using a physical combination of gypsum and digital video the installation creates a 'mental topos' — an imaginary garden constructed from home video archives and nostalgic childhood imagery.

While this internal landscape offers a temporary shelter from the intrusions of modern life, the project highlights the dangers of psychological escapism. Through the use of video loops the work demonstrates how the pursuit of a 'lost paradise' can lead to a state of stagnation, where the sanctuary eventually becomes a cell.

By encasing the digital screen within the cold static medium of gypsum the installation physically manifests the tension between the fluid nature of memory and the rigid reality of the present. It prompts the viewer to reflect on their own relationship with the past: is our memory a source of strength or a gilded cage that prevents us from moving forward?
